A concussion is defined as a mild traumatic brain injury. Concussions are very complex, and the research on concussions and proper recovery is fairly new and constantly changing as we learn more about them.

Having a concussion assessment done is important to set the stage for recovery. A physiotherapist with specialized training will do a thorough assessment that involves not only tests for brain function, but also for other dysfunction that typically happens alongside a concussion. Some of the more common injuries sustained with a concussion are whiplash, new onset or worsening of headaches, and vertigo or other vestibular dysfunctions (see our page on vestibular rehabilitation).

Based on where you are at in your concussions recovery, your therapist will guide you through the international protocol, and educate you on what to do or not so every step of the way. Research shows if you recover fully and properly from a concussion, then you are at no increased risk should you sustain further concussions than someone who has never had one. A proper recovery becomes particularly important for those who play contact sports. Your physiotherapist will do tests to clear you for returning to sport, as well as returning you to contact sport.

We also offer baseline testing, which is a test recommended for youth in contact sports. The purpose of a baseline test is to have a baseline level of cognitive and balance function, that can be compared back to should the athlete sustain a concussion throughout their season. This allows us to make better informed decisions about returning to play for that individual athlete. A new baseline test is recommended every year.

At Movement First, our therapists have extended one on one treatment and assessment times, which is ideal in the setting of concussion. We treat in private rooms which can also be beneficial to those who may experience symptoms such as sensitivity to light and noise. We believe that movement is medicine, and therefore are ideally positioned to work with those with concussions who are looking to get back to sports or activity.
